A large-scale rescue and recovery effort is actively ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of lost sailing vessels transporting humanitarian supplies en route from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Naval Rescue Efforts Deployed

Authorities in Mexico has deployed naval teams and military search aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were carrying no fewer than nine crew members, per a navy statement.

The ships had been expected to make landfall in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, the navy said.

Background of Aid to the Island

The island nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the island endures multiple national electricity failures.

"The crews and captains are experienced sailors, and both vessels are fitted with appropriate safety equipment and emergency beacons," a spokesperson for the convoy stated.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"We are co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.

Earlier Humanitarian Delivery

Previously that week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had carried a significant amount of relief supplies to the island.

That vessel, dubbed "a modern Granma" after the boat in which Castro returned to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the 1950s, brought photovoltaic panels, drugs, baby formula, cycles and foodstuffs.

Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of efforts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, when a energy blockade on the country came into effect.

International organizations have since raised alarms about "dire" supply shortages, with over fifty thousand surgeries called off in Cuba because of power shortages.

Reacting to previous statements, a prominent official from Cuba stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations were initiated, although their current progress remains not publicly known.

The Mexican navy affirmed it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its command to find the sailboats and secure the security of the sailors.

As of now, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban government.
