A Tale of Surprising Kindness: The Time a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dorm Ground
Back in the year 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I assumed I would book lodging when I arrived, but upon reaching the city, a large conference was in town and every single youth hostels and budget accommodation were fully booked.
Hailing from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could spend the night at the airport – only to discover the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open all night. Unsure of quite what to do and growing worried, I hopped on a bus into town and started wandering near the casino, thinking I might spend the evening somewhere that stayed open through the night. This was not ideal in the best shape for acing a crucial interview the next day, however, being a broke student, I couldn’t afford.
Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.
Apparently, I appeared lost as a female student spotted me walking aimlessly through the city and asked if everything was alright. I explained my situation and right away she offered I could crash on the ground of her dormitory at the Australian National University – which was perfect, as that’s where my medical school interview would take place the next morning. She even offered a meal: a leftover stuffed baguettes she brought back her part-time job. I had access to the bathroom and a secure location and safe to spend the night.
With hindsight, it’s clear to me the significant risk she took as a young woman allowing a guy she’d just met crash at her place. Back then I was in a bubble of male privilege and did not consider to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she did that – and remain incredibly thankful.
I never did attending ANU, and I never saw the student afterwards, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of human compassion. I hope karma has rewarded her generosity abundantly. Our society requires more people with such compassion.
