Afghan Rulers Employed Left-Behind British Equipment to Find Local Nationals That Served With Allied Troops, Investigation Learns

An informant has disclosed the Afghan leak inquiry that the UK failed to secure confidential devices enabling the militant group to track down Afghans that had served with western forces.

Data Breach Puts Thousands in Danger

Person A, known as Person A, testified that people concerned by the security lapse were instructed to change residences and change their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from militant forces.

Lawmakers are currently examining the Conservative government's handling of a serious leak of private information concerning approximately 19k individuals who had requested to move to the United Kingdom to flee militant rule.

The Information Breach Was Discovered

A data file including private information, comprising names, phone numbers and in some cases family information, was accidentally leaked by a worker working at UK special forces headquarters in last year.

The incident came to light in late 2023, when details of several individuals who had applied to settle in Britain appeared on social media.

Militant Technology

Many believe there's a misunderstanding that the Taliban do not have the same sort of facilities that western nations possess,” Person A informed the committee.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they possess it. Once they acquire your phone number, they can trace your precise location. That is what intelligence groups accomplished.”

When questioned about whether the Taliban owned advanced decryption, the whistleblower declared: “They've got everything.”

Aftermath of the Information Leak

Initial findings submitted to the investigation suggested that approximately fifty family members and associates of Afghans affected by the leak had been executed.

A gag order regarding the incident was put in force in last year and restricted all details concerning it from public disclosure until mid-2025.

Protective Actions

Given injunction limitations, the whistleblower and the volunteer organization associated with told Afghan families they were working with that they had “concerns that mobile communications had been compromised”.

“Our suggestion was that they relocate where feasible and changed their contact details. Those were the crucial data that, if the Taliban acquired this information, would result in their location being found,” she said.

Disputed Conclusions

The whistleblower disputed that government assessment conducted by a former official had been incorrect to conclude that the possession of the dataset by militant forces was “unlikely to substantially change an individual's existing exposure”.

“The thing to remember is that these Afghans are in hiding from the Taliban; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves former occupations.”

Person A described horrific violence experienced by affected individuals, comprising electrocution, simulated drowning, and severe beatings.

“There are cases of four-year-old children who have had their arms broken to pressure relatives to say where someone is,” Person A stated.
