"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the Haim sisters?" a message arrives. "My request was to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There's just a key snag: The author likewise desires to be the Haims' fourth member. Furthermore, we are not alone. Several celebrated admirers have also petitioned for the honor.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path performing shows at small eateries with their family. Now they're multiple Grammy contenders.

Like all the best groups, they're a tight-knit gang. Their videos repeatedly feature them marching in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such unfettered exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'After your show, I bought a bass'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "It is the biggest honor. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage people to form a group."

"And thus everyone is invited to be the next part of the family."

Grammy Nod

The group are speaking from a break, where they're resting up after an major tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in contention for the award.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant achievement," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The album was born from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that unique transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The words track departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they want to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to consciously practice shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed toughness demanded a different sonic direction – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the percussion.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The trio's honesty inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their dating misadventures.

One man left Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Path

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an international following.

Yet Haim will forever be their number one priority.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It's like no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still going strong."
