California's Governor States He Is Evaluating a Presidential Campaign for 2028
Gavin Newsom, a leading member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he intends to determine whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections conclude.
"Yes, it would be dishonest if I said no," Newsom remarked when pressed about seriously considering a presidential run after the 2026 ballots. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not."
Newsom's current term as California's leader concludes in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he emphasized that any decision is still years away.
"Fate will determine that," he said.
Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary
Newsom has come to the forefront as a notable adversary of the Trump administration, using his social media accounts and advocating for a ballot measure that would boost Democratic representation in Congress in following Republican redistricting efforts. This action has drawn criticism from adversaries.
Controversy Over Funds
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor shows no concern about the state's residents in a recent interview on Fox News. The secretary revealed plans to withhold federal funds from the state and warned revoking the state's ability to provide CDLs.
"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from the state," he declared, in the wake of a this week's fatal crash in the state involving an unauthorized commercial driver that led to three deaths and casualties.
The governor's team noted that the federal government had approved the worker's status repeatedly, which enabled him to secure a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.
Duffy had previously indicated he was withholding $40 million from the state for failing to implement language proficiency rules for CDL holders.
Strong Response from the Governor's Office
"Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand federal law," Newsom's office retorted in a previous statement countering Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we rely on data: California CDL holders had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Facts don't lie. The federal leadership misleads."
Polling Data and Future Prospects
A this month's study revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and a significant portion of the electorate believed that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has grown to an average of 33.5% from around 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an mean of previous highs to under 40%.
Some time ago, Newsom remarked while visiting several swing states that he had "no clue" about his intentions for 2028.
He noted his earlier challenges, including being found to have a learning disability at the age of five.
"The thought that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, extraordinary," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I'm looking forward to who emerges in the next election and who answers the call. And that's the question for the voters."
