EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
