From Praise to Rage: Conservative Response to Jeffrey Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.

Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole

Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo describing the censorship procedure.

Concerns Raised by Redactions

While Trump's name and likeness are visible in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious questions about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater transparency.

“The public are raging and disengaging,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he added.

A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure

But, some conservative pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.

The release—originating from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are entirely censored, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.

But some are not, featuring high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed some conservative voices to go on the offensive.

“It’s pretty ironic how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”

Clinton Campaign Releases Response

Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those documents for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.

“The release is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.

Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted

Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud calls for action that preceded the legislative approval to enact a law requiring the files' publication.

The commentator, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were given hard-copy folders of files that included little new data.
