Government Reduces US Flights as Shutdown Continues

As the historic federal government standoff approaches day 38, US flight paths is about to get less congested. This doesn't apply for US air travel hubs.

Safety Measures Put in Place

Donald Trump’s aviation regulatory body has said flights are being reduced to uphold air traffic control operational integrity during the federal government funding lapse, currently the lengthiest in history and with no apparent progress of a solution between GOP lawmakers and Democrats to end the federal budget deadlock.

Airline regulators selected “busiest routes” where the FAA says air traffic requires reduction by 4% by 6am ET on Friday, a move that would force airlines to call off thousands of journeys and create a series of scheduling complications and setbacks at some of the nation’s largest airports.

Official Statement

The federal transportation leader, Sean Duffy, commented on social media Thursday that the move was “not about politics” but rather “about assessing the data and mitigating accumulating danger in the system as air traffic professionals continue working without pay”.

“Flying is safe today, tomorrow, and the day after because of the proactive actions we are taking,” Duffy stated.

Flight Cancellations

Analysts forecast numerous potentially thousands of flights could be canceled. These reductions might account for up to 1,800 flights and upwards of 268,000 seats combined, per an projection by the aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Targeted Terminals

The involved terminals spanning numerous states include the busiest ones across the US – including Atlanta, North Carolina's city, DEN, DFW, MCO, LAX, MIA and SFO. Within major metropolitan areas – such as NYC, Texas city and Chicago – multiple airports will be involved.

All three airports serving the DC metro – IAD, Baltimore/Washington international and Ronald Reagan Washington national – will be impacted, inevitably causing flight disruptions for government officials as well as the flying public.
