Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.

“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that reassures me, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities released video stills Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday in the area between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as a key part of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
