Per freedom of information data, more than 2,000 minors who were either trafficked or arrived in the UK unaccompanied to claim asylum disappeared from local authority custody last year.

Analysis Discloses Concerning Data

A report titled “Until Harm Ends” filed information requests to youth protection agencies across the United Kingdom.

Figures from one hundred thirty-five local authorities indicated that out of 2,335 minors classified as having been victimized or believed to be trafficking victims, eight hundred sixty-four (thirty-seven percent) were listed as disappeared.

Overall 141 municipal councils responded to inquiries about solo young asylum applicants in their care, who numbered eleven thousand nine hundred ninety-nine young people. Of these, one thousand five hundred one (13%) were reported missing.

High Risk for At-Risk Children

The study, issued by advocacy groups, warns that these populations are at “serious threat” of vanishing from care.

A number of trafficked children in the UK are local residents while additional cases are from overseas.

They have probably experienced either abuse for sexual purposes or criminal exploitation, for example by county lines gangs.

Systemic Shortcomings in Protection

Local authorities have a statutory duty to safeguard and support trafficked and unaccompanied children under child protection frameworks. However, there is no published national authorities data on the issue.

The recent study warns that elements such as uncertain legal status can amplify young people’s exposure to continued risk, placing them at serious threat of re-victimization and renewed exploitation.

Appeals for Measures

It says there is a “persistent and serious deficiency” in safeguarding and urges municipal councils and law enforcement to guarantee compliance with effective methods.

The analysts also encourage the National Education Department to guarantee all trafficked and unaccompanied children can access suitable housing that protects them from being exploited again.

Lodging Concerns

Starting in late 2021, municipal councils have been obligated to guarantee that all children in care under 16 are placed in settings that provide care.

However, teenagers aged 16 and 17 can still be accommodated in so-called “assisted housing” that does not provide day-to-day care.

In exceptional circumstances, these teenagers can be placed in temporary housing, mobile homes, camping structures, boats, or shared housing with non-family members.

Government Reply

A government spokesperson stated: “This government took over a minor protection structure unable to satisfy the needs of the country’s most vulnerable children.

“Our major children’s wellbeing and schools bill is the largest reform of children’s social care in a generation, implementing our mission to sever the connection between young people’s background and their future success.”

The representative stated further that the steps include bettering the availability of supervised accommodation, enhanced data exchange, requiring the formation of multi-agency child protection teams in every area, and implementing a new obligation on collaborators to automatically include education and childcare settings in their safeguarding arrangements to help stop children falling through the cracks.
