A significant industrial zone situated in the suburbs of the capital is addressing radioactive pollution following a government taskforce found traces of the dangerous isotope Caesium-137 at 22 production plants inside the area, which includes companies that export frozen marine products.

Emergency Measures and Goods Withdrawal

This discovery has led to immediate cleanup operations and the relocation of local inhabitants, following a similar pollution alert in the US that was traced back to the Jakarta plants.

A major multinational store chain is among the businesses that have withdrawn items from their stores after the finding.

Investigation and Discovery of Contamination

The country's authorities launched an investigation when the US Food and Drug Administration detected Caesium-137, a radioactive substance, in a consignment of chilled breaded shrimp sent by an Indonesian firm.

Officials released an advisory instructing distributors and retailers to discard the goods and avoid selling it, although the found amount was far below the authority's intervention threshold. They noted that the quantity of Caesium-137 they had found would not present an acute risk to consumers.

The FDA explained: “The main health effect of worry following longer term, ongoing small amount exposure (for example through eating of contaminated products or liquid over time) is an increased chance of the disease, caused by damage to DNA within living cells.”

Widespread Contamination and Health Examinations

Radiation scans showed at least 22 factories in the manufacturing zone were contaminated. The Indonesian team did not name the 21 additional production facilities, but confirmed they would immediately undergo cleanup procedures conducted by Indonesia's atomic energy agency.

A senior official declared that residents residing in strongly polluted areas would be moved until the site was decontaminated, emphasizing that the well-being of the residents was the “top priority”.

Health officials also conducted examinations on nearby workers and people located near the manufacturing estate, finding nine people who showed signs for exposure to Caesium-137. These individuals were sent to a hospital before being cleared to go back.

Cleanup and Containment Measures

The affected locations will immediately undergo cleanup operations by Indonesia's nuclear institute. Officials have also designated the site of a scrap metal plant as an isolation center for contaminated materials.

The country, which operates no nuclear energy facilities or arms program, believes that Caesium-137 may have come into the country from overseas.

Source of Contamination and Import Limits

An official spokesperson informed reporters that recycled metal imports were the likely cause of pollution and announced the government would immediately impose restrictions on scrap metal imports. He said that transport were also being checked for potential exposure as they moved through the region.

About Caesium-137 and Public Concerns

Caesium-137 is a dangerous radioactive isotope that typically enters the ecosystem as a result of nuclear experiments or incidents, like the Fukushima disaster or Chornobyl. Trace quantities are found in earth, products and air.

The amount found in the frozen shrimp was far lower than FDA action limits, but the agency stated prolonged exposure to even small amounts of the element was associated to an higher risk of the disease.

Withdrawal Details

The withdrawn shrimp was available at large store locations across at least a 12 American states, such as Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
