The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
His passing follows shortly after he debuted his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as a number of outfits for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
After a career spanning half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
