The people of Israel mark two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Gaza peace talks proceed
Citizens have come together across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-led assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks proceeded in Egypt over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The incident led to over 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel reacted by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are considered accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The violent opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will no longer present a danger to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership postponed state remembrance events until 16 October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still were held across the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of people who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast across Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.
Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' representatives gathered in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a second day of third-party negotiations to examine the provisions of the proposal.
A high-ranking delegate involved in the discussions indicated that an night meeting of negotiations started at evening in Egypt.
The source said the morning session concluded without significant progress, amid disagreements over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not resume combat after the initial stage of the agreement.
He noted that the talks are "tough and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that facilitators are making efforts to close the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Essential Issues in Discussions
- An enduring ceasefire
- The swap of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance deliveries
- After-conflict administration of the territory
Civilian Feeling

"Once we see everybody home once more, we can breathe anew. Then we can commence recover," she continued.
Outside the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people gathered to demonstrate their support for the families of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty stay in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.
Protester one woman stated: "We need do every compromise necessary for the hostages to come back home. But we really want assurances that we will be safe."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of the population want the conflict to end in as payment for the liberation of the captives.
Palestinian Situation
At the area of the gathering, grieving people came together to pay their respects.
From there, the noise of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the heavy Israeli shelling continued.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side district, area and locality areas and in the east side district of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.
"Once the evening comes, the fear arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, shared.
"We are fearful of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are resting together, clinging, especially my little child who places his head on me all night."
"Every second we check the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the fighting will come back to us."
