The Young Spinner Makes Unexpected Inclusion in England's Ashes Squad
The English team has opted for a 12-man squad just 48 hours ahead of the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a unexpected place.
The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the visiting team will delay until the day of the initial match to decide whether Perth Stadium pitch suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are part of the 12-man group, indicating there are no doubts about either fast bowler's fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with the latter most likely to be omitted if Bashir makes the final team.
Ground Conditions Lean Toward Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to choose an all-seam attack on a ground that has hosted several previous Tests.
During these matches, 134 wickets have fallen to pace bowling, with only a small number to spin.
Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers combined have only eight.
At a venue known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a side relying on fast bowlers is still the probable decision.
Spin Options Considered
Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to offer some spin while additionally bolstering the batting lineup.
But McCullum has chosen to keep faith with Bashir, having stated previously that he would be his preferred spinner for the series.
In July, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “decent,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for people who haven’t done it in the previous in Australian pitches,” he remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so they come out and perform well out here.”
