This Swine Life: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Leader.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as pardoning holiday birds, but the county's top official experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: happy, diverse, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Annually, we are delighted to mark heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and cafecito as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
